Early in the Twenty-Second Century, Terra is on the cusp of great discoveries. Having invented a (very expensive) means to travel between the stars, humanity has begun to spread out. However, as colonies take hold and a new wave of exploration stretches out ever further, an undercurrent of anxiety has become discernible among the leaders of Earth's five national blocs. Because, if the rumors regarding the discoveries of that new wave of exploration are true, it could mean that humanity might also be teetering on the edge of a desperate war for its very survival.

Synopsis:

Hijacked and stuck in cold sleep by a shadowy intelligence agency, analyst Caine Riordan is reanimated after 13 years to carry out a simple, if clandestine, assignment: assess the first physical evidence of extraterrestrial intelligence.

However, arriving on-site in the Delta Pavonis system, Caine discovers that the job he's been given is anything but secret or safe. With assassins and saboteurs dogging his every step, it's clear that someone doesn't want his mission to succeed.

But when Caine does complete the mission, and first contact with exosapients seems imminent, an even more deadly threat arises: the possibility of an immense interstellar war. The primary objective: to exterminate all of humanity.

And, for some reason, Caine is the first target.

Fire With Fire blends interstellar epic, intrigue, and military SF and is the lead-off novel of the Tales of the Terran Republic future history. Previously published works in this setting—almost 70,000 words worth—have appeared in Analog SF Magazine and the Defending the Future anthologies.

What You'll Find In The Section "Tales of the Terran Republic"

Readers can enter my "history of the future" through wirecopy made available to interstellar travellers by the IINS—the Independent Interstellar News Service. Each page provides updates via "on-site" reportage, interviews with newsmakers, world and equipment statistics, and images from all over the human sphere of space. So remember: you may decide to 'read it all in one visit'—but there will be more wire-copy every week, and updates to the images, features, gazetteer and other sections every quarter. So don't stay away too long: come back to see what's new in humanity's increasingly uncertain future.
